POTENTISATION –
It is a physical process by which latent curative
properties of a drug brought into activities.
Dr. Stuart Close “Homeopathic dynamization are
processes is a mathematico-mechanical process.”
The doctrine of
drug dynamization was introduced into homeopathy though the 5th
edition of organon of medicine (1833).
PROCESS OF POTENTISATION
1. 1- Trituration – In case of insoluble
substances.
a)
– Centesimal scale
b)
– Decimal scale
2. 2 - Succussion – In case of soluble
substances.

– 50 millesimal scale
a) - DECIMAL SCALE –
Introduced by Dr. Constantine Hering.
Dr. Vehsemeyer gave more detailed description of this
scale in 1835.
The decimal scale denoted by suffixing the latter ‘X’.
Ratio – 1: 9
Drug strength – 1/10
b) - CENTESIMAL SCALE–
Introduced by Dr Hahnemann in 5th edition
of organon of medicine (1833) in aph. 270.
Denoted by ‘C’
Ratio – 1 : 99
Drug strength – 1/100
c) - 50-MILLECIMAL SCALE –
Introduced by Dr Hahnemann in 6th edition
of organon of medicine new method as “Renewed Dynamisation” but name was given
by Dr Pierre Schmedt.
It is also known as Q potency.
Designated as – 0/1, 0/2, 0/3 etc
LM/1, LM/2, LM/3 etc
Here “L” for 50, “M” for Millesimal, “0” for Poppy
sized globule
Ratio - 1 : 50,000
Drug strength – 1 / 5 x 10 10
a) - TRITURATION
For the trituration sugar of milk used instead of
other solid vehicles.
Substances are taken for trituration
Hahnemann classified substances into 3 categories-
1. - Dry insoluble (insoluble in purified water and alcohol) medicinal substances (class VII) e. g. – Arsenicum album, Alumina, Calcarea carb, Carbo veg, graphitis etc.
2. - Liquid insoluble medicinal substances (class VIII) e. g. – Petroleum, Snake venoms such as Lachesis, Naja etc. Nosode such as Lyssin, Variolinum etc.
3. - Fresh vegetable and animal substances (class IX) e. g. – Anthracinum, Psorinum, Medorrhinum, Anacardium etc.
Conversion of trituration into liquid potency:
- - We can not convert every trituration
into liquid potency.
- - We can convert only from 6X
trituration under decimal scale and 3rd under centesimal scale into
liquid potency.
- - The first liquid potency prepared
from trituration under centesimal scale is 4C and under decimal scale is 8X.
b) - SUCCUSSION
- For drug substance which are soluble in water or alcohol.
- ‘Succussion’ comes from Latin succussum succutere meaning shaking up.
Process of succussion
- In 5th edition of organon of medicine Dr Hahnamenn advise only 2 strokes.
- In 6th edition of organon of medicine & in chronic disease advise for 10 strokes.
- A.H.P. & G.H.P. they still advocate 10 strokes.
POTENCY –
Potency means dialution plus energy.
Potency (potentia = power in the sense of ability,
capacity)
FLUXION POTENCY –
Definition – It is special and peculiar process when
the 6X potency obtained by trituration turned
into 8X potency by succession (in liquid potency). We can convert only 6X trituration
under decimal scale (6X to 8X) and 3rd under the centesimal scale
(3C to 4C) into liquid potency.
The higher potency prepared with the help of machines
are known as High Fluxion Potency.
In this process purified water is used as vehicle
instead of alcohol for the intermediate step.
STRAIGHT POTENCY –
As Burt of London 7X liquid potency can be prepared
from its previous 6X trituration.
Method –
- 1 part of 6X trituration + 9 parts purified water + 10 downward strokes (which end in a jerk) = 7X liquid potency
- 1 part of 7X liquid potency + 9 parts of alcohol + 10 downward strokes = 8X liquid potency.
BACK POTENCY –
Two or three potencies prior to the frequently used
potencies are called Back Potencies.
Ex. For 30CH potency the back potency would be 29CH,
28CH, 27CH.
Utility – it has great advantage for manufacturer to
prepare large quantities of medicines.
