 Latin – vehiculum from vehere means to carry.

Vehicle means transmission or conveyance.

a) – SOLID OR DRY VEHICLE


1 - SUGAR OF MILK 

(SACCHARUM LACTIS OR LACTOSE)

Saccharum – sugar, Lactes – milk

Prepared from goat’s milk

Soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol.

Sugar of milk used for trituration instead of other solid vehicle – because it is best crystalline substance, scentless, gritty to touch, faintly sweet.


2 - CANE SUGAR 

(SUCROSE, SUCROSUM)

Synonym – saccharum purificatum, refined sugar, misri, chini.

Main sources are sugar cane and beetroot.

GRAPE SUGAR (GLUCOSE OR DEXTROSE)

C6H12O6


3 - PLACEBO

Synonym: Nihilinum, Phytum, Rubrum, Lactopen

Placebo from latin placer, to please or satisfy

Stuart Close – Placebo is the second best remedy.


4 - GLOBULES

Soluble in water. insoluble in alcohol.


5 - PELLET

Smaller shape globule.


6 - CONES

Cones are prepared from cane sugar added with egg albumin, i.e. two kingdoms - animal kingdom & vegetable kingdoms.

Shape – Conical or semi-globular

Sige – commonly used size is no. 6, the size is determined by the diameter of the bace in millimeters.

Consistency – harder then globules.


7 - TABLETS OR TABLOIDS

Prepared from pure refined sugar of milk.

Shape – Discoid in form, round but flat.

Size – 1grain or 65mg.

Consistency – softer then globules or pilules

Solubility – more easily soluble in water than globules or pilules. Insoluble in alcohol.

1 - PURIFIED WATER

Should always be stored in pyrex glass bottles.


2 - ALCOHOL

a)- ABSOLUTE ALCOHOL

 (Anhydrous alcohol; Alcohol dehydrated)

Alcohol entirely free from water i.e. 100/ pure alcohol.

Sp. Gravity – 0.792

Uses – in Stapf process for purification of sugar of milk.

b)- STRONG ALCOHOL 

(Alcohol fortior; Alcohol frrties)

In homeopathy word alcohol means strong alcohol. Its strength become appr. 95% by volume.

Sp. Gravity – 0.186

c)- DILUTE ALCOHOL 

Contains 62.5% by volume

Sp. Gravity – 0.89

Uses – for potentisation of in medicine in decimal scale & cleaning of utensils

d)- DISPENSING ALCOHOL 

(Alcohol officinalis, official alcohol)

Contains 88% by volume

Sp. Gravity – 0.84

Uses – Preparation of medicine from mother tincture, for dispensing.


3 - RECTIFIED SPIRIT 

Contain 91.29% by volume

Sp. Gravity – 0.812

Uses – Potentisation of medicines, dispensing purpose.


4 - PROOF SPIRIT 

By act of parliament proof spirit is a mixture of alcohol and purified water weighing 12/13th of an equal volume of purified water at 51* F.


5 - GLYCERINE 

CH2OHCHOHCH2OH  OR  C3H5(OH)3

Sp. Gravity – 1.26

It is an antiseptic, emollient, and demulcent.


6 - SYMPLE SYRUP

It is a mixture of sucrose (or cane sugar) and purified water.


c) - SEMISOLID VEHICLE


1 - VASELINE 

(petroleum jelly, Paraff moll, Paraffinum molie)

2 - LANOLIN 

(Woll fat, Adeps lanae, Adeps lan)

It is a purified anhydrous fat like substance, obtained from the wool of the sheep, ovis aries.


3 - SPERMACETI 

It is a waxy substance obtained from the head of the sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus Lirin.

Uses – for preparation of ointment.


4 - ISIN GLASS 

It is a collagen derived from the thin inner silver shiny layer of the air bladder of some fishes.

Uses – it is a component of calendula and arnica plasters
