ANTIDOTE – A substance which modifies or opposes the effects of a remedy.
ALKALOID – A
nitrogenous body of a basic alkali which can be extracted from most poisonous
plants by chemical means.
ACID – A
compound which contains hydrogen.
ALKALI – A
water soluble base
ATOM – Smallest portion of an element which can take part in a chemical reaction.
BALSAMS –
They are mixtures or resinous substances.
BASE – An
oxide or hydroxide of a metal (or non-metal)
CONCORDANT
REMEDIES – Drugs whose actions are similar but of dissimilar origin.
COMPLEMENTARY
– A relation wherein one drug completes the cure which was commenced by another
drug.
COMPOUNDS –
When two or more elements chemically unite in some definite proportion.
CONDENSE –
To make or become dense.
DAY BOOK –
It is the registry of drug proving where the provers record their symptoms day
by day basis.
DRUG – A
substance which alters the function or nutrition of a part or parts of the
body.
DECANTATION
– It is a process of pouring gently and slowly a liquid without disturbing
insoluble solid substances.
DESICATION
– It is a process of drying or removing the moisture contained in any
substance.
ELEMENT –
An unanalysable substance.
ESTERS –
Organic compounds formed by reactions between acids and alcohols.
INIMICAL
REMEDIES – Drugs which have a relation of enmity towards each other and
therefore do not follow each other well.
MONOGRPH – It
is detailed record of the standard specification for each drug or medicine
recorded in pharmacopeia.
PHARMACOKINETICS
– The way in which the body handles the drug preparation.
PHARMACODYNAMICS
– The molecule which is carrying pharmacological message in the body.
PHARMACOGNOSY
– It is one of the branch of pharmacology which deals with the characteristics
of various source of drugs which serve as a means of identification, like
distribution, morphology, cellular structure, biochemistry etc.
POSOLOGY –
Study of doses.
PHARMACEUTIC
– Knowledge of preparing medicine.
PHARMACIST
– Person who prepares or dispenses medicines.
PHARMACOMANIA
– Abnormal tendency for taking drugs.
PHARMACOPEDICS
– Teaching of pharmacy.
PHARMACOPHILLIA
– Self-drugging.
PHARMACOPHOBIA
– Dread of medicines.
PHARMACOPRAXY
– Crude drug substances are converted into real medicines.
PLACEBO –
From the Latin – to please.
REMEDY –
Medicine administered to perform a cure.
POLYCHREST
– From the Greek word – many uses.
TOXICOLOGY
– Science of poisons.
