Leukoderma is a skin disease that causes loss of skin pigmentation (melanin) that leads to skin whitening. The white patches on the skin known as Leukoderma.  These patches are due to partial or total loss of skin pigmentation or depigmentation.

Leukoderma is an autoimmune disorder wherein the immune system of the body attacks the healthy cells and it turns start affecting the body. Firstly it appear in spots and the spot cover almost all parts of the body including face, scalp and genitals.

Though leukoderma can affect any part of the body, pigmentation usually occurs first on the sun exposure part of the body.

CAUSES OF LEUKODERMA

The exact cause of leukoderma is unknown. Some factors which is responsible for leukoderma

GENETIC –

-  In children those parents suffering from leukoderma.

CONGENITAL –

  • Partial albinism
  • Tuberous sclerosis
  • Piebaldism and Waardenburg syndrome

IMMUNOLOGICAL

  • Melanoma

POST INFLAMMATORY

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Lichen sclirosus
  • Thermal burns

INFECTION

  • Syphilis
  • Pityriasis versicolor
  • Leprosy
  • Lichen planus
  • Progressive macular hypopigmentation

DRUGS

  • EGFR inhibitors
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors
  • Methylphenidate transdermal patch

OCCUPATIONAL/ CHEMICAL

  • Leukoderma occurs on the exposed parts of the body.
  • Exposure to depigmentation agents, such as p-tertiary butyl phenol.
  • Depimented areas may continue to arise even after the patient is no longer in contact with the chemicals.

OTHERS

  • Cutaneous t-cell lymphoma
  • Alopecia musinosa


SYMPTOMS OF LEUCODERMA

The main sign and symptoms of leukoderma are milky white patches on the skin. Other signs include

.premature greying of hair (eyelashes, beard and eyebrow)

.loss of colour in the mucous membrane

.changes in colour of retina.

NATRUM MURIATICUM

Natrum muriaticum is also a polychrest remedy. It is prepared from common salt. Skin symptoms is very prominent in natrum muriaticum skin looks transparent, waxy, greasy, shiny skin. It is very deep acting and long-acting remedy.


PHOSPHORUS
